This makes the cartilages present in the knees weak, thereby leading to osteoarthritis.

Heredity or Gender

Degenerative joint disease can also be a result of genetic mutation. A person if inherits some abnormalities in the structure of bones or cartilages from the previous generation can develop this disease.

It can also be as a result of some near relative who suffered from or is suffering from osteoarthritis.

This disease is most likely to affect women above the age of 55 more than men. As mentioned above, this is due to the deficiency of calcium in women.

Stress Injuries

This depends on the job of the particular person. If person’s job is such that there is a lot of pressure exerted on the joints, it can result in degenerative joint disease.

Physical activities like continuous squatting, kneeling, or lifting very heavy weights can lead to this disease.

Also proper measures should be taken to look after the joints after accidents and injury for preventing the joints from becoming weak and susceptible to this joint disease.

This is a common cause of degenerative joint disease.

Certain other types of illness can also lead to degenerative joint disease. Rheumatoid arthritis which is also quite a common type of arthritis can develop this arthritis as well.

Also presence of excess growth hormone or excess iron the blood can be the causes of osteoarthritis. Few other metabolic disorders can also make the joints weak.


People who are into sports like tennis, long distance running, football etc. can develop this disease if they do not take proper precautions and avoid getting injured.

Also, if they injured, they should take proper rest and wait to hit the ground till the injury is completely healed.

But it should also be kept in mind that regular (hand) exercises is good for the health as they make the joints strong and decrease the chances of such diseases.
